Gregg Robertson of Duluth is making his Boston Marathon debut in Monday’s 117th edition of the famous race. He can’t wait to run from Hopkinton, to Ashland, to Natick, to Wellesley and up Heartbreak Hill.
Duluth native Kara Goucher, who will run the marathon at this year’s Summer Olympics in London, won the USA Half Marathon Championships women’s race today, setting a course record in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 46 seconds.
Tim Scannell and Molly Hicken were a team on Dec. 15 when they and their courtroom bailiff saved each others’ lives by disarming a man who forced his way into the Cook County Attorney’s office in Grand Marais and shot Scannell three times. They'll be a team again today when they run the 13.1-mile Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon.
Michael Renavitz will finish Grandma’s Marathon today in 5 hours, 30 minutes — give or take two minutes. He will do it while carrying balloons and a sign reading “5:30” so that other runners with that goal can hang with him.

When Kevin Peterson isn’t sick from chemotherapy, he’s working on his 30 rental properties in Superior or donating time as a board member with Grandma’s Marathon. His daughter will be racing 26.2 miles for the first time Saturday to help raise money to fight pancreatic cancer.
Twenty-five years ago this summer in 1985, I had the privilege of running my first marathon in Duluth at Grandma’s Marathon. After that first experience I was hooked and continued to run marathons, traveling around the country, but also coming back to Duluth on the third Saturday of June many times.
After 34 years of successfully directing more than 100,000 runners the 26.2 miles from Two Harbors to Duluth, the Grandma’s Marathon event has now experienced a fatality: Norman Ruth of Hermantown succumbed to personal health issues during the June 19 running of the Garry Bjorklund Half-Marathon (“Grandma’s death was Hermantown man, 64,” June 21, and “Family: Heart attack was lying in wait,” June 22).
