Hermantown’s Cole Koepke and Scott Wasbotten each scored twice and the top-ranked Hawks scored the final three goals to defeat Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 5-2 on Thursday night at Cloquet and clinch at least a share of the Lake Superior Conference high school boys hockey title.
Saturday, the big stage and bright lights beckoned for James Newgren and his Cloquet-Esko-Carlton teammates, and the Lumberjacks didn’t disappoint. Newgren scored the final two goals in a 4-1 victory over Rochester Lourdes.

Voters in both Carlton and Thomson cast ballots in overwhelming numbers to support a merger vote and form a single community. In Carlton, it was 171-10 in favor; in Thomson the vote was 61-13 in favor, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office.
