Board member Ann Wasson made the motion to accept a student transition team’s first choice: for Denfeld and East names, colors and mascots to remain the same, while Central’s name and mascot are retired.
Pilgrim Congregational Church will host a neighborhood discussion Monday night to address demographic changes expected at the eastern high school under the Duluth school district’s long-range facilities plan.
East High School has fewer low-income students and students of color than Central and Denfeld. When Central closes, the new eastern high school will receive a relative influx of diversity in the form of students from the central corridor.
The Kiwanis Heritage Holiday Classic began as a modest four-team tournament a year ago at the newly opened Heritage Sports Center, but doubled in size this year with four Class AA teams and four Class A schools competing in a round-robin format.
A vote is expected to take place on the option sometime in December. If approved, Denfeld would close next year and reopen for the 2011-2012 school year when construction is complete and Central High School closes permanently.
