In his youth, Warner Wirta was one of the famed “Flying Finn” runners at Embarrass High School. Later on, he was a teacher, a counselor to veterans, a leader in creating Duluth's American Indian Commission and a frequent voice on the News Tribune Opinion page. Wirta died Thursday at age 80.
