In Minnesota, ice fishing shelters must be removed from the ice by Monday south of a line formed by U.S. Highway 10, east along Minnesota Highway 34 to Minnesota Highway 200, east along Highway 200 to U.S. Highway 2, and east along Highway 2 to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.
The Minnesota Deer Hunters Association is moving ahead with efforts to mount a broad deer-feeding effort in Northeastern Minnesota, said Mark Johnson, executive director of the group. MDHA has sent out emails seeking bids for producing the food, Johnson said.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) are planning listening sessions on deer population management, to be held around the state later this winter.
Duluth birder and birding author Laura Erickson has won the Roger Tory Peterson Award from the American Birding Association for “a lifetime of achievements in promoting the cause of birding,” according to the association.
The plight of white-tailed deer in Minnesota’s deer permit area 178 is a microcosm of other areas throughout the region. Deer populations there were high in the mid-2000s, but have dropped to just below goal this year, said Tom Rusch, Department of Natural Resources area wildlife manager in Tower.
You could hear the complaints wherever hunters gathered last fall. Deer numbers, they said, were dismal. Way down. Hunters weren’t seeing deer. They were seeing few tracks. In Northeastern Minnesota, many said they saw more wolf tracks than deer tracks.
Hunters in Duluth’s city bow hunt for deer registered 26 percent fewer deer last fall than the average in the hunt’s previous eight years, according to the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance. The nonprofit group conducts the hunt under contract with the city.

For the first time since 2009, park officials at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore say ice conditions on Lake Superior now allow over-ice travel to the park’s mainland sea caves. In a news release Wednesday, park officials said colder-than-normal temperatures have created an early freeze-up of the waters around the Apostle Islands this year. That includes the area along the mainland coast featuring some of the most spectacular cliffs and sea caves found on the Great Lakes.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has tweaked a new lake trout fishing regulation announced last week for Mukooda Lake near Crane Lake. The new rule calls for catch-and-release fishing only for lake trout on Mukooda effective for 18 months beginning Wednesday .
