Field reports: Agency culls cormorants on Lake Vermilion 
A United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services crew killed 70 cormorants on Lake Vermilion on May 29 as part of an effort to reduce the cormorant population on the lake, said Duane Williams, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources large-lake specialist at Tower. The day before, DNR officials had counted 349 cormorant nests on Potato Island in the eastern basin of the lake. That total was down from 434 nests last year.

Two groups challenging Minnesota rules for a wolf hunting and trapping season were dealt another blow Tuesday when the Minnesota Court of Appeals dismissed a petition aimed at undoing the rules establishing a wolf hunt.

Field reports: Voyageurs moose population appears stable 
About 46 moose are roaming the woods of Voyageurs National Park near International Falls, according to the park’s recently completed aerial survey. The 2013 population is similar to estimates from 2009-11, park officials said. No survey was conducted in 2012. The calf-to-cow ratio and the percent of calves in the population were relatively high in 2013, also similar to estimates from 2010-11.
