There’s no one to blame but yourself for missing class
Video games are the reason for students struggles in school as much as food is to blame for peoples weight issues. College often is a persons first taste of freedom (loads of free time) from parental ...

Local view: Enbridge pipeline expansions are not the way
As Enbridge asks the state Public Utilities Commission to increase the allowable volume in its Alberta Clipper pipeline, northern Minnesota might want to take notice. The current flow is 440,000 barrels per day. Enbridge is submitting permit applications to increase that flow to 570,000 barrels and, eventually to 800,000 barrels a day.By Winona LaDuke , May 23, 2013
Local view: Obama's leadership needed to address global warming
On May 9, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere passed a long-feared milestone. Scientists at Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii reported it reached a concentration of 400 parts per million, something not seen on the Earth for millions of years.By Michelle Hesterberg and Frank Jewell , May 22, 2013
Local view: Duluth School Board has realistic options to avoid another tax levy
The Duluth school district has been soliciting community comments on curriculum for the future, perhaps with the thought that we taxpayers will support a levy this fall to help pay for what we suggest (“Board to decide next week about asking voters for more money,” May 14).May 15, 2013
Local view: Alcohol tax increase would cause widespread damage in Minnesota
Mark Twain, who visited Duluth in 1895, once said, “No man’s life, liberty or property is safe while the legislature is in session.” If you are employed in Minnesota’s hospitality or tourism industries, never has Twain’s quip seemed less humorous or more ominous than today.

Local view: Beware the demogogue, democracy’s big enemy
In March I wrote a letter to the editor about cowardly legislators who act so as to appear to be doing something, whether good, bad or useless. In a one-room, rural schoolhouse in northern Kentucky in 1918, my father and his fellow seventh-graders were taught to recognize such politicians. Following is an excerpt from one of my father’s civics texts:

Local view: Rural Minnesota needs reliable wireless service
Mobile apps are a thriving industry, but we need a strong wireless broadband system to support our efforts.

Local view: Pension surcharge is an unfair bailout
In the decades I’ve worked in the insurance industry, I’ve been baffled at how heavily insurance policies are taxed and how little consumers know about it. Yet the Minnesota Legislature is looking at adding another new tax on our customers to bail out an underfunded pension fund for public-safety employees.

Local view: Please ask lawmakers to support affordable housing
While Duluth has a lot to offer residents — including a diverse economy, arts and culture and majestic views of nature — what it doesn’t seem to have enough of is housing.

DNR's view: Keep fishing a Wisconsin tradition
Northern Wisconsin weather for the fishing opener has been notoriously fickle over the years, and some have joked that this year may be more suited to ice fishing.
