Duluth-based Allete announced Tuesday that it boosted its earnings for shareholders and increased the value of its stock over the past year while battling floods, fires and increased pressures to add renewable energy and use less coal.
Damage from last year’s historic flooding in the Northland will probably mean an increase in electric bills for Minnesota Power customers to cover $35 million to $44 million in repairs at its dam in Thomson.
A poll conducted for the Sierra Club shows that most Minnesota Power customers surveyed support a “fundamental change” in the generation of electricity, away from coal and toward solar and wind power and energy efficiency.
The groups, which would rather see the Boswell Energy Center Unit 4 shut down and retired, want an assessment of what impact continuing to burn coal will have on the state’s environment and human health.
