Children Stay N Play opens on Central Entrance

When Dana Billings of Duluth went on a trip to Fargo, N.D., nearly six years ago to visit her cousin, she was inspired by a unique business idea. The two women wanted to do some shopping and grab lunch one afternoon, so Billing’s cousin decided she would drop her children off at a place called Kids Kingdom.

Duluthian embarks on 6-week trip throughout Africa

It was only two weeks ago when Jay Cole of Duluth found out that his dream of traveling to Africa was about to become a reality. On Jan. 16, Cole received a call from a woman named Beth Grobe Magomolla, who is originally from Duluth, informing him that he was welcome to come along on a six-week journey throughout four countries in Africa.

Duluth bed-and-breakfast earns national distinction

Tim Allen said that he and his wife Angie are still in shock that the Duluth bed-and-breakfast they own and operate was chosen as top in the nation. It was only a week ago when the couple got a call from TripAdvisor, an online site where travelers can plan vacations, informing them that the A.G. Thomson House Historic Bed & Breakfast was ranked as first out of more than 21,000 bed-and-breakfasts across the United States.

Vigil at Lake Place held in memory of gun victims

A vigil in memory of the Tucson shooting victims was held in the late afternoon on Sunday, Jan. 8, in Duluth. It was the one-year anniversary of the tragedy where 18 people were injured and 6 died from gunshot wounds during Arizona Congresswoman Gabriella Giffords’ “Congress on your corner” event at a Tucson shopping center.

Forum Communications to start Upper Midwest news service

Forum Communications Company is expanding its presence in the region with the launch of a multi-state news service, company President Lloyd Case announced today. Existing FCC newspapers, websites, magazines and broadcast outlets in North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin will provide content for the news service — an effort that will begin immediately. Over the next two years, the company will make continued investments into the news service with the intention of building the most comprehensive, affordable product to which other media outlets throughout the Upper Midwest can subscribe. The FCC properties will continue to publish the kinds of regional, national and international stories and photos offered by wire outlets such as the AP. However a company-wide task force will evaluate in the coming year which outside news providers are the best fit for the entire FCC network.

Windjammers Big Band helps Saint Ann’s residents get a jump on New Year’s Eve festivities

The Windjammers is a group of local musicians with a strong sense of camaraderie. “There was a bunch of us who just got together and I had some music. We just got together and started playing and we just continued,” said Marie Garofalo, an alto- and tenor saxophone player with the group. Founded in the late 1980s by Ruth Dodge, Eileen Kochevar and Bob Gelbmann, the ensemble frequently visits senior citizen residences around the Twin Ports performing big band music of the 30s and 40s.
