Local author shares inspirational tales about light display

Chuck Frederick has spent much of his life telling people’s stories as a newspaper reporter and editor. Continuing this tradition in his recently published book, “Spirit of the Lights,” Frederick tells the story of Marcia Hales, a local woman who holds a Christmas light display in her beachside backyard every year.

Rubber Chicken Theater kicks off 2012 season

To start off its fourth annual Holiday Comedy Revue, Rubber Chicken Theater will be presenting “The Running (Unopposed) Man, or, Another Fine Ness You've Gotten Us Into” this Friday, Dec. 2. Duluth painter to host ‘Idiom: Imagination Ink’ this Friday

In the blink of an eye. Everything but the kitchen sink. Great minds think alike. When pigs fly. You are what you eat. These are just a few of the common expressions – referred to as idioms – that Duluth artist Nikki Johnson will feature in her show “Idiom: Imagination Ink,” which will take place Friday, Dec. 2 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Just for the Season Gallery in downtown Duluth.

Book Review: Owls Among Us: Twelve Owls

Two beloved Minnesotans, an artist and an ornithologist, have joined their talents in presenting the profiles of twelve owls who make their home in the state in a book titled … well, “Twelve Owls.” Betsy Bowen is most well-known for her woodblock prints illustrating picture books with north woods themes. Laura Erickson shares her bird expertise in many ways, including weekly broadcasts of the radio program “For the Birds.” In Twelve Owls, Bowen and Erickson wave a sort of magic wand over the Minnesota landscape and make us aware of the not-so-hidden life of owls that surround us. Duluth artist Carl Gawboy honored with county arts excellence award

The St. Louis County Board recognized artist Carl Gawboy with the Board’s “Excellence in the Arts & Sciences” award on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The award is for those county residents who have excelled in the fields of arts and sciences. Gawboy was nominated by Second District County Commissioner Steve O’Neil.

Norwegian royal visit stirs memories of father

Twenty-five years ago on Oct. 17, 1986, I attended my father’s funeral. People often said of him, “There’s never a dull moment when you are with Earl,” and having interesting parents helped shaped my life. When I heard that the king and queen of Norway planned to visit Duluth on Oct. 17 and that I would be among journalists covering it, I thought of the significance of the date to me.

Area models to 'Occupy the Runway' in support of local arts

A number of models from around Duluth and the Twin Cities will get on the catwalk next weekend in the hopes of raising money for the local arts. Organized by a group of four local designers, the “Occupy the Runway” fashion show is focused on bringing arts into the Duluth community by raising money for the Avalon Educational Institute, located on West Superior Street.

Rarely seen art exhibited at historical society

The painting, “Woman with Washing Machine,” once could be found in countless Duluth homes. Now, 91 years later, area residents can view the original work in its own home at the Duluth Depot. Painted by Walter Beach Humphrey for the July 1920 Marshall Wells Hardware Company catalog cover, it is part of an upcoming art exhibition sponsored by the St. Louis County Historical Society titled, “Art Unveiled.”

Film producer serves up food for thought during presentation at UMD

Human eating habits have changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000. But, going back 10,000 years to the dawn of human eating history would bite hard into anyone’s schedule. Thankfully, producer Robert Kenner used modern times as the departure point for his documentary “Food, Inc.” An examination of the modern industrial food system, the documentary was nominated for an Academy Award and has sold nearly 500,000 DVDs.
