Do it: Hang at the Ridge
You can beat the crowds to Hawk Ridge by visiting before the Sept. 14-16 Hawk Weekend Festival. Take a pair of binoculars and plan to hang out for a couple of hours some day between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. That’s when most hawks are moving. West-wind days are best. Naturalists will have banded birds to tell you about. Take the kids. The main overlook is about a mile east of Glenwood Street on Skyline Parkway. And it’s all free.

Hit the trails
Nothing sheds the stress of classwork like a good run, and Duluth’s college students are fortunate to have some excellent wooded trails within a few blocks of campus. Trail running — as opposed to running on streets — is very popular in Duluth from one end of town to the other.

Get active, explore, indoors and out
You’ve seen the Aerial Lift Bridge, if not in person at least in calendar form. The attraction is one of the most-photographed sites in the area. Other points of interest include that well-lit cylinder on the hill, Enger Tower, and Glensheen, the storied mansion on London Road.
