Column: Faithful people come to different conclusions
In the Oct. 7 issue of the Budgeteer, there was an ad on page A4 that began with a comment on the upcoming Marriage Amendment, then moved to a curious deprecation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I am one of the ELCA’s 65 bishops and feel compelled to respond in the spirit of civility, integrity and truthfulness.

Reader’s view: Vote no to keep religion out of marriage
On the freedom of religion and on voting “yes” on the marriage amendment: A marriage license is issued by the state and not the church. Reader’s view: Vote no on marriage and defend Constitution
There is a simple reason to vote “no” on the marriage amendment, regardless of your moral or religious beliefs. It is against our Constitution to do so. Our country was founded on separation of church and state. There is enough discrimination in our country. Let’s not create more.

Reader's view: Amendment preserves sanctity of marriage
I am writing because my letter of Sept. 15 (“Marriage amendment honors God’s word”) prompted a negative response via a Sept. 25 letter (“Voting ‘no’ has nothing to do with religion”).
