Reader's view: Marriage amendment a distraction from voter ID
The many television ads, yard signs and letters to the editor about gay marriage, pro and con, show that the Republican gay-marriage amendment is distracting attention from what I and others suspect is the Republicans’ primary objective: their voter-identification amendment. This no doubt was planned.

With the hubbub about same-sex marriage coming to the forefront, I decided to look up the Bible verses myself.

She knew it could happen. She knew he could become more violent. Police said they tried to help her escape, but she went back to him anyway. On Thursday, Tensia Richard’s estranged husband shot and killed her in a busy Cottage Grove strip mall in broad daylight.

Reader's view: Constitution should protect, not limit our rights
Our Minnesota Constitution should not be changed lightly. The Constitution should protect our rights. Currently not a single amendment limits rights, but both proposed amendments on the Nov. 6 ballot would restrict the rights of others.

Reader's view: Support a new future by voting no on amendment
On the marriage amendment issue, there already is a clear winner. The politically motivated attempt to push back gains in the area of gay rights has had the opposite effect.

Reader's view: It’s not up to us to vote on marriages
My partner and I just returned from our niece’s wedding. She married the man she fell in love with. Not everyone in the family believed it was a good fit. If our family had voted on it we’re not sure the marriage would have been approved. But it was their decision and we accepted it.

Reader's view: Marriage about more than childbearing
It seems to me that the writers of letters to the editor stating that marriage is about creating and raising children are thinking only about the 20- to 40-year-olds. They negate the late-in-life marriages such as mine and my husband’s.

Reader’s view: Getting a voter ID isn’t easy for everyone
I know a woman who was born in and grew up in Duluth. She worked for our government overseas and was married to another American in Switzerland. They came back to the United States, had two children and were divorced, but she kept her married name for the children’s sake. Before retiring she worked at a law firm in Chicago and decided to return to Duluth.
