Local view: No child should have to wonder why they’ve been abandoned
My heart was in my throat after reading Wednesday’s front-page article about the daughter of Minnesota House candidate Erik Simonson (“Simonson’s daughter says he abandoned her”). Not only did I feel for Simonson’s daughter, Leah, and for her mother, I could relate. I’ve lived a similar situation in my family.

Reader's view: Media frenzy over Gauthier was shameful
I have never seen such a feeding frenzy as there has been with regard to Rep. Kerry Gauthier’s indiscretion. No one seems to be thinking of his mental health after, all of a sudden, his being a gay man was exposed to the public.

Reader's view: Send conservative Silvers to replace Gauthier
Duluth’s House District 7B, a Democratic stronghold, could be up for grabs after state Rep. Kerry Gauthier’s embarrassing incident a few weeks back. CANDIDATE FORUMS: A full week from today, still in the wake of the Republican National Convention and still in the throes of the Democratic National Convention, “it” is full-on around here: hopefuls, incumbents, positions, charges, rebuttals and more. It is debate and candidate forum season.

Reader’s View: Gauthier incident highlights need for new laws to protect children
While I appreciated the News Tribune’s Aug. 18 editorial calling on Rep. Kerry Gauthier to resign (Our View: “Gauthier can do right thing by stepping down”), Gauthier’s actions demand far more scrutiny and outrage. Things need to change regarding how we respond to this kind of action and how we protect our kids.
