In her column on Oct. 17, Dr. Kion Hoffman offered the recent research of Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas as a landmark study proving that children of homosexual parents fare poorly in life compared to children of heterosexual parents. Dr. Hoffman used the study to persuade readers to vote “yes” on the marriage amendment issue.

I am writing because my letter of Sept. 15 (“Marriage amendment honors God’s word”) prompted a negative response via a Sept. 25 letter (“Voting ‘no’ has nothing to do with religion”).

Reader’s view: Keep government out of deciding who can marry
A television commercial asked, “Who should decide the definition of marriage?” Then it answered, “We think it should be the people.” It didn’t specifically identify which people, though. I think the people who should decide are those who wish to be married, and nobody else.

In response: Research shows adult children of gay parents face more health risks
A pair of pediatricians, in their Oct. 4 column, “Marriage amendment harmful to health of children, adolescents,” wrote that, “More than 25 years of research has documented that there is no relationship between parents’ sexual orientation and any measure of a child’s emotional, psychosocial and behavioral adjustment.” They were therefore against the Minnesota marriage amendment.

Marriage is by definition the uniting of one man and one woman. This arrangement was not born out of prejudice or fear of homosexuality.

Reader’s view: Minnesota amendments would exclude people
Shortly after she married me more than 41 years ago, my Lutheran wife (there were six Lutheran pastors in her family and I’m a United Methodist pastor now retired) asked me what this Methodist emphasis on being inclusive was all about. I explained to her that compared to the Lutheran emphasis on doctrine or dogma, Methodists are concerned about including all or, better yet, ALL (with regard to doctrine or other matters or issues which tend to separate or divide us).

Reader's view: Minnesota’s marriage amendment rhetoric confusing
Unfortunately, discussion concerning the so-called marriage amendment often lacks both civility and clarity. I find the arguments against the amendment confusing.

Reader’s view: Let gays marry and leave the judgment to God
As a teenager, as a young adult and even as a voting adult, I have been uncomfortable around gays. That has faded. I’m 65 now. Looking back, I’ve seen a nephew here, a cousin over there and a niece close by grow up gay. It was clear to me two of three of them were gay before they could spell or know the meaning of the word gay. Those two displayed mannerisms and toy selection while they were children that was different and clear. The nephew’s father recently watched a home movie and told me he realized for the first time his son was gay was when he was a child. I suppose his love for his son overlooked those traits.
