Local view: Racism harms our youth
Incidents fueled by racism this year have spotlighted adult behaviors that prevent a peaceful existence within the Duluth community. People watching and reading our news may think racist attitudes and actions are singular events and not part of a larger problem that promotes daily inequalities and even violence in our community. However, adults serving our area youth of color through many of the organizations listed in the box accompanying this commentary know the negative effects of racism permeate the lives of our youth.

City leader's view: Response, not racism, defines Duluth
"An event has happened, upon which it is difficult to speak and impossible to remain silent.” Those words are carved atop of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial, dedicated to the three black men senselessly lynched by an angry white mob in downtown Duluth in 1920. This dark and disgusting chapter of Duluth’s history will forever serve as our reminder of our collective civic duty as a community to stand up to racism and all other forms of discrimination and hatred.

Local view: Voter ID amendment comes with real costs
The Un-Fair Campaign is more than just a set of billboards. We challenge ourselves to ask, “What are the racial injustices we see? What are we doing about it?” Oftentimes we find, as Oscar Wilde put it, “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.”

Reader's view: Un-Fair Campaign focuses on the impact of racism
Each Sunday after worship we at Peace United Church of Christ gather downstairs in the fellowship hall for coffee, cookies and a chance to talk, meet and catch up. On one wall is a bright-yellow, six-foot banner with questions painted on it in vibrant reds and oranges: “How do you feel about white privilege?” “What are you doing about racism?” Such questions invite our conversations to go deeper than we might usually.

To feel discrimination, try walking in my shoes
This story of my grandmother has been told many times; however, for me it became part of my soul. They lived in Alabama in the early ’40s. Deedum, the name we used for my grandmother, had a cleaning lady. When it came to lunchtime, the young woman would go out onto the porch to eat and drink from a Mason jar.

Reader's view: Un-Fair Campaign a call to a better future
I love the undoing-racism campaign in Duluth. I was introduced to it when I passed by the Community Action office and saw one of the white-privilege posters in the window. When it sank in I felt happy. It seemed to me a poster of that quality had to represent the efforts of hundreds of people and thousands of hours.
