Reader's View: Use restraint in display of wolf trophy photos
Now that the Minnesota Supreme Court has rejected an effort to stop the unnecessary wolf hunt and barbaric trapping, the slaughter of these magnificent animals begins.

Reader's view: Time for readers to look for a real newspaper
Half the News Tribune’s Oct. 24 Opinion page, above the fold, was devoted to an endorsement of presidential candidate Mitt Romney. It read like a regurgitation of Romney-Ryan campaign press releases.

Our view: Mayor Rybak makes his pitch for Obama
In sizing up the presidential vote next month, R.T. Rybak, the mayor of Minneapolis and a rising star nationally for the Democrats, conjures up an image of the Titanic. This would be right after it hit the iceberg but before it succumbed to the frigid waters.

Reader’s view: Don’t trust the media to check political claims
Here’s one man’s nomination for oxymoron of the day. It’s from the front page of the Oct. 6 News Tribune and an Associated Press story by Calvin Woodward: “When Obama and (Romney) debate tonight, the media’s fact-checking corps will be watching.”

Reader's view: Some faith leaders forget who they represent
What has particularly caught my attention of late is the ardent position of many church leaders on behalf of same-sex marriage.

Reader’s view: Students will be left behind by Duluth’s large classes
I could not believe my eyes with the headline across the top of the front page of the Sunday, Oct. 7 paper: “49 students in a class.” Unbelievable! I thought with the new schools, problems like this would be solved.

Reader's view: Story on gay pastor was objective, newsworthy
The writer of the Sept. 11 letter, “Story on gay pastor displayed paper’s opinion,” clearly does not understand the difference between news and opinion.

Anti-U.S. outrage began with Christian activist
A video about the Prophet Muhammad that triggered an outbreak of anti-American protest last week moved from being a YouTube obscurity to a touchstone for anger across the world because of a phone call from a U.S.-based anti-Islam activist to a reporter for an Egyptian newspaper.

Local view: No child should have to wonder why they’ve been abandoned
My heart was in my throat after reading Wednesday’s front-page article about the daughter of Minnesota House candidate Erik Simonson (“Simonson’s daughter says he abandoned her”). Not only did I feel for Simonson’s daughter, Leah, and for her mother, I could relate. I’ve lived a similar situation in my family.

GOP convention's final night to focus on telling Romney's story
When Mitt Romney addresses the Republican convention Thursday night, he'll do it from a stage that puts him a little bit closer to the crowd inside the convention hall. His campaign hopes the evening ends with Americans feeling a little bit closer to the Republican presidential candidate, too.

Reader's view: Last Place on Earth an abomination, not nuisance
I just read the front page article about the Last Place on Earth (“Last Place on Earth deemed a ‘nuisance,’” Aug. 10). So now the city of Duluth has labeled it a “nuisance.” Well, that’s pretty tame, isn’t it? I’d call it an abomination, which my dictionary says is “anything that excites disgust, hatred or loathing.”

Reader's view: Killing of trees on Chester Creek is inexcusable
It was sad to read on the front page of the July 17 News Tribune about the excessive tree cutting at Chester Creek (“Up in arms over downed trees”). But it was devastating to go there and witness firsthand the unnecessary destruction of the creek brought about by overzealous chain saws unleashed by the city of Duluth.
