Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer’s commentary in the News Tribune on Feb. 2 (National View: “How to debunk the war on women”) provided sage advice to stumbling, bumbling Republicans: Stick to policy and forswear amateur psychology. Specifically, Krauthammer suggested “a straightforward strategy for seizing the high ground on abortion. … Focus on the horror of late-term abortion — and get it banned.” I believe few would disagree were they to observe the sickening cruelty of crushing an infant’s skull.

Someone has taken a steamroller to the American character. This came to me as I listened to Jireh Mabamba and Rogier Gregoire at the Martin Luther King Day rally in the DECC auditorium. The American character used to be defined by grit, devotion, courage and self-reliance. But as 20th century industrialization spread wealth and consumption, our connections became eroded. These talented speakers offered a clear message: We have more power, love and hope in our character —as demonstrated by Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King and Nelson Mandela. These 20th-century leaders urged civic disobedience and spent years in jail, demonstrating the reality of a higher law.
