Local view: Enbridge pipeline expansions not the way
As Enbridge asks the state Public Utilities Commission to increase the allowable volume in its Alberta Clipper pipeline, northern Minnesota might want to take notice. The current flow is 440,000 barrels per day. Enbridge is submitting permit applications to increase that flow to 570,000 barrels and, eventually to 800,000 barrels a day.

Reader's view: Story mischaracterized community of Barnes
I was disturbed by the description, in the fire story of May 16, of my community, Barnes, as being “a scattered collection of homes, cabins, small resorts, taverns and deer shacks along Wisconsin Highway 27.” (The story was headlined, “Wildfire’s wrath was swift, severe.”)

Field reports: Hermantown native’s brook trout memories published
Some Duluth residents might remember Harry Peterson, who grew up in Hermantown about 60 years ago. Peterson, who now lives in Middleton, Wis., wrote a story about brook trout fishing that appears in the Spring 2013 issue of the American Fly Fisher journal. The story, titled “A Boy’s Trout Stream,” describes Peterson’s memories of fishing Miller Creek as a young boy with his friend Gordy Engberg.

Creating 'defensible space' can be key to homes surviving wildfires
Even to the untrained eye, as last week’s Germann Road fire still smoldered, a pattern was obvious: Of those cabins and homes that burned, many were tucked tight into the forest. Of those nearby that still stood when the smoke cleared, many had large, open yards.
