Other view: Sound-bite duel lacks context
Compared with Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden wasn’t such a bad guy. That sentence just goes to show you the importance of context. Without the Hitler reference, the statement appears to be absolutely batty.

Reader's view: Letter picked wrong people to compare Obama to
The writer of the Sept. 25 letter, “Be careful who you pick this November,” seemed to be trying to compare President Obama to dictators Joe Stalin, Adolph Hitler, Mao Tse Tung, and Kim Il Sung.

Reader’s view: History proves value of an armed citizenry
In response to the obvious sarcasm from the writer of the Feb. 22 letter, “Elections better protection than well-armed citizens,” the effectiveness of a deterrent cannot be measured reliably until it is gone. Try asking 17 million Soviet citizens who died at the hands of Adolf Hitler after having their weapons confiscated by Joseph Stalin. An election in prewar Germany had Hitler by a landslide. They had no constitution with a bill of rights, so privately owned weapons were confiscated.

Reader's view: Be careful who you pick in November
History really does repeat time after time. Think about it. All of the past dictators, chancellors and chairmen, etc., had basically the same philosophy.

Reader's view: Gun lobby keeps repeating the same old lies
It’s time again to put to sleep some myths the gun lobby spouts as truth. These “facts” come up time and again, and they are still lies.

Reader's view: Democracy will never die
A lot has happened in the way American thinking has developed since World War I and to how world capitalism operates and practices now. The thinking is more democratic — but not much, though.

Reader’s view: Gun control ultimately will lead to confiscation
I questioned the rhetoric regarding gun control reflected in the Feb. 17 letter, “Enhanced gun regulations won’t lead to confiscation.”

Reader’s view: Guns protect us from the government
Ideas expressed in the Dec. 25 letter, “It’s time to repeal the Second Amendment,” have been voiced many times. But we will never be able to confiscate all weapons the letter writer considers illegal or unnecessary. There are too many of us who will not give up our handguns without a fight to the bitter end.

Reader's view: Letter writer overlooked evils within the church
With his March 17 letter, “Religion overcomes intense dislike of Obama’s policies,” a priest from Duluth adamantly displayed an ultraconservative bombast with an alarming alacrity that undoubtedly was conducive to his sleeping soundly at night.

Local view: Collateral damage from drone aircraft is morally unacceptable
Drone aircraft, referred to as UAVs or unmanned aerial vehicles, are unpiloted planes. No humans are in these aircraft. They are controlled automatically by computer and remote control and operated by navigators on the ground or in other vehicles. These drones can be sent wherever, whenever and for whatever purpose.

Reader's view: Cowards beat youth for wearing camouflage hat
A hard-working, uber-responsible young man, my son was merely walking back home from the gas station when, because he was wearing a camouflage hat, five young men found it necessary to jump him. Five cowardly thugs beat one person. How manly they must feel.

Local view: A well-armed citizenry is necessary to protect our nation
America is caught up in hysteria masquerading as a massive surge of enlightenment purportedly inspiring wisdom about the obvious right things to do. Two components of this are a proposed ban on AR-15 “dictator-dissuader rifles,” aka AR-15 “constitution-preserver rifles,” aka AR-15 “family-protector rifles,” and a proposed ban on high-capacity magazines.

Reader's view: Don’t fear the government, fear government’s collapse
We know both sides of the gun debate. One says guns protect against tyranny; the other says guns enable terrible acts of violence. Frankly, they’re both right.

"Local view: Push back against uncivil people
I intend this not to contradict but to expand on the thinking in the commentary on the June 6 cover of the News Tribune’s Sunday Opinion section, which was headlined, “Can we be civil? Please?”

A new year also means a fresh start. Time to wipe away all the mistakes of the past 365 days and start with a clean slate. Good news for the metamorphic rock industry because there were quite a few miscues last year.

Michigan legislators defy unions, OK right-to-work measures
In an audacious flex of political muscle, Republicans in a single day reached the brink of a goal that for years has seemed an all-but-impossible dream: making the labor bastion of Michigan a right-to-work state.

Column: Remembering military tragedies in December
Dec. 7, 1941, is undeniably a solemn day in our county’s history. Yet December includes many other commemorations of military tragedy that sadly are little remembered.
