Reader's view: Churches and charities can’t fend off poverty alone
Charitable giving is up. The organization Giving USA reports that American individuals and businesses gave $291 billion to charity in 2010, a 3 percent increase over 2009. Good news. But this increase pales in comparison to what is being taken away in the current siege of budget cuts in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Washington, D.C.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the plant in ‘little Shop of Horrors’
Roger Corman might regret that he never bothered to copyright his 1960 film “Little Shop of Horrors,” but the rest of the world is pretty happy that his omission eventually led to the fun-filled black comedy musical directed by Michelle Juntunen that opened Thursday night at the Duluth Play Ground.

Our view: Let locals settle elections, not attack-funding PACs
The bucks keep getting bigger and the attacks they pay for nastier. Never mind that it happens every election and all over the country. Never mind that it has become as much a part of the fabric of modern politics as kissing babies once marked the campaigns of yesteryear. None of that makes it easier to stomach.

Racism endures here, and campaign reminds us to stop it
SAM COOK: A few years ago, just a day or two after President Obama was elected, I walked into a northern Minnesota deer camp on assignment for the News Tribune. Within moments after welcoming me to the camp, one of the hunters looked at me and said, “Well, I guess they’ll be planting watermelons on the White House lawn now.”

CD review: Burnside is beyond fine in ‘All the World’
I assumed that the new release from one of Chequamegon Bay’s finest musicians, Bruce Burnside, would be a tasty slice of Americana, but that would be selling this project way short.

Joe Paterno: 1926-2012
Happy Valley was perfect for Joe Paterno, a place where “JoePa” knew best, where he not only won more football games than any other major college coach, but won them the right way: with integrity and sportsmanship.
