Scrapbook: Halloween celebrations

From left are Maureen McGrath, Imogene McGrath and Susan McGrath Enright, all of Lake Nebagamon.

My mother, the late Imogene McGrath of Lake Nebagamon, loved Halloween. Every Halloween she would dress up to greet her grandchildren and the other kids who came to her door trick-or-treating. In her later years she would join in the fun at Sharon’s Lakeview Cafe on Halloween night for “Creature Night.” The volunteer staff all would dress up in costumes and serve the guests donating tips to Kids in Nebagamon, a group that helps area children. While she was unable to do the

physical work, she would dress up and greet everyone as they came in.

Every Halloween we think of her and how she loved Halloween. Her daughters still volunteer for “Creature Night.”

 • Our family celebrates Halloween at the Benedictine Health Center where my mother, Marcella Beaupre, lives. She is 93 years old and uses a wheelchair. Children and adults come in costumes and we bring pizza and special party food. The children pass treats around to other residents and enjoy showing off their costumes. In this picture are (back row, from left) Tony Sheda and Paulette Sheda; and (front row, from left) Justin Swanson, Marcella Beaupre, Jayden Swanson and Emma Gamache.

Submitted by Paulette Sheda of Wrenshall.
 • Every year on the Saturday before Halloween, our family has held an annual pumpkin- carving party; this year will be our 12th annual. Every October we get together and carve, eat, laugh and finally, at dark, we hold the lighting ceremony.

Everyone participates — kids, parents, grandparents, friends, aunts, uncles and cousins. Some are elaborate and some are simple, but they’re all fun to see when the candles are lit.

It’s just fun! Submitted by Cindy Syria of Alborn.

 • Here’s a picture of the pumpkin I carved for Hillside Acres Farm. The owner, Mel, was such a great client to work with and I can’t tell you the number of plants and veggies he insisted I take home! When I saw this 40-pound pumpkin at his pumpkin patch in Scanlon, I just couldn’t resist making him a special thank you. It took 3½ hours to make, but it was worth every minute of it.

Submitted by Cordy Swanson, an advertising representative at the Duluth News Tribune.
