Photo Gallery: Canosia Township family recovers from house fire after cancer

Jim and Jodi Kehtel stand in their living room, which was damaged by Sunday's fire. The Kehtel's were out of town for the weekend, but Jim's brother who came to the house to take care of the family's two dogs found it on fire. The dogs didn't survive. The Kehtels are very thankful for the quick response of the Canosia Township, Grand Lake Township and Hermantown volunteer fire departments. Also, most of the Kehtel’s family photos were saved from the fire. (Amanda Hansmeyer/ ahansmeyer@duluthnews.com)

Kehtel, his wife and three kids were gone for the weekend, but the family's two dogs, who were at home and being cared for by Kehtel's brother, did not survive the fire. On January 25th Kehtel had a kidney with a cancerous tumor on it removed. (Amanda Hansmeyer/ ahansmeyer@duluthnews.com)
  • Ryan Kehtel talks about how he found his brother's home (background) on fire when he came to the house to check on his family's dogs on Sunday. Jim Kehtel and his family were in Silver Bay for a hockey tournament, so Ryan who lives across the street in Canosia Township, was taking care of the dogs. When he opened the door he found smoke, and called for help. The dogs did not survive the fire. Ryan Kehtel also helped Jim discover a tumor on his kidney by giving him a playful punch that resulted in Jim finding out he had cancer earlier this year.
