JOAN HELEN (HANSON) JAMAR
Joan Helen (Hanson) Jamar died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, in her home surrounded by her family.
Joan was born Jan. 15, 1927, to Edwin and Sarah (Tomlinson) Hanson in Minneapolis. She spent her early years in Huron, S.D., and moved to Duluth during her middle school years. Joan graduated from Duluth Central High School and attended the University of Minnesota. In 1947 Joan married Norton Jamar, a marriage that spanned 61 years.
She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, PEO, Junior League, Northland Country Club and the Duluth Women’s Club. Over the years she volunteered at St. Mary’s and St. Luke’s hospitals and the Altar Guild at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. During Joan and Norton’s retirement years, they enjoyed the company of many friends while living at different times in Florida, Arizona and Montana. They returned to Duluth in 2005.
Joan took great joy in raising her family, traveling the world, playing bridge and spending summers at Schultz Lake. Crossword puzzles and reading were two of her favorite past-times. She was an accomplished watercolor artist and knitter, always having a knitting project, or two, up until the time of her passing.
Joan was a wonderful and supportive mother to all of her seven children. She had the patience of Job as she supported each of her children’s strengths and interests.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Norton; an infant son; brother-in-law Walker Jamar Jr.; and sister-in-law Shirley Jamar.
Joan is survived by and will be missed dearly by her children, Cathy (Jon) Friedberg of Middleton, Wis., David (Patti) of Sebastian, Fla., Sally (Larry) Carlson of Glenview, Ill., Robin (John) Manning of Billings, Mont., Peter of Telluride, Colo., Jade Shovein (Desiree Holmquist) of Roseville, Minn., and Tom of Duluth; sister Margie (Barry) Gray of Penn Valley, Calif.; sister-in-law Sylvia Jamar of Duluth; grandchildren Robyn, Brooke, Sara, Megan, Michael, Molly, Kevin, Zack, Chloe, Evan and Sarah; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A special thank you for the special care from St. Luke’s in-home and hospice staff and caregivers from Home Instead.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be held July 12 in Duluth.
Memorials may be made in Joan’s name to the charity of your choice.
