Helen Lahti, 96, passed away Dec. 21, 2013 at Perham Health.
She was born on Nov. 11, 1917 in New York Mills, Minn. Her parents were the late Alexander and Lempi (Kohtanen) Porkkonen.
Helen graduated from the New York Mills High School with the class of 1936. She graduated from Nursing School in Duluth, and then was employed as an LPN for 33 years at the Miller Dwan Hospital in Duluth. Helen was united in marriage with Arnie Into Lahti, he passed away on March 5 ,1955. Helen retired in 1989 and resided in Duluth. In 1999, Helen made her home in New York Mills.
She enjoyed reading and playing Scrabble. She was also an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents; husband, Arnie; son, Dwight Lahti; brothers, Edmund Porkkonen and Emil Porkkonen; nephew, Steve Porkkonen.
Helen is survived by her grandson, Matthew Lahti; granddaughters, Jennifer Lahti and Amber Lahti; two great-grandchildren, Nailah McGhee and Oriah McGhee; sister-in-law, Winnie Porkkonen; niece, Marcia (Wally) Kawecki; and her niece, Deb Porkkonen (Helen's personal assistant and chauffeur extraordinaire); numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Saturday Jan. 4, 2013 in the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home in New York Mills, Minn. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, New York Mills, Minn.
