Ingeborg R. “Inge” Martin, 88, of Duluth, passed away on Dec. 8, 2013 in St. Luke’s hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Inge was born in Sayda, Germany on Oct. 16, 1925 to Max and Albertine (Lorenz) Schoene amidst the Ore Mtns of Saxony.
Her deep-seated love of the outdoors and exercise blossomed in these grand environs. On Feb. 13, 1945, while attending college in Dresden Germany, her life was forever altered by the firebombing of the city and the ensuing Russian occupation. Surviving three attempts at escape from East Germany, Inge was able to begin life anew in Erding, West Germany.
Recovering from a bicycle accident, she met the man that would become her husband of 60 years, Darrell. They soon started a family that would grow to three sons and a daughter. Through the trials of military life, Inge always put her husband and children first and instilled a love of family, outdoors and home cooking. When her family was grown, Inge began a second career with the Farmers Home Adm. that culminated with a Civil Servant of the Year Award.
Retirement brought many volunteer activities and travels throughout the continent with Darrell and Patches their dog. Her love for us shall always endure.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father; a son Terry in 1976 and her eldest child Mark in 2002.
Inge is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Darrell; daughter Karla Bennett of Wichita Kan.; son Darrell Jr. (Linda) of Duluth; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to Dr. Mark Goellner and the caring staff at St. Luke’s Hospice.
