Agnes Peloquin Rajala 95, of Grand Rapids, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
Agnes was born in 1917 to Alfred and Hulda Peloquin.
She attended Bigfork Elementary and High School; graduating in 1934. Agnes attended Mankato State College, Duluth Teachers, and University of Minnesota Duluth. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Minnesota. She taught in the rural schools known as School District No. 1 in Itasca County. She later taught in Bigfork, Cohasset and Murphy School in Grand Rapids. She was employed as a clerk typist for Minnesota Job Service and a museum curator for Itasca County Historical Society.
Agnes was married to Benhart Rajala of Effie on Nov. 20, 1941. He died Oct. 31, 2003. They lived in Bigfork until 1964, when they moved to Grand Rapids. Agnes was an author, historian, avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, gardening, knitting, sewing, and creative cooking.
Preceding her in death were parents; husband, Benhart; brothers, Louis, Earl, Donald; sisters, Lillian, Mae, Alice, and Ida.
She is survived by son, Brian (Lyn) Rajala, Grand Rapids, Minn.; daughters, Kathlyn “Kitty” Overbo, Devils Lake, N.D., Nicolyn “Nikki” (Bill Vossler) Rajala, Rockville, Minn., Kristin (Jerry Steinke) Rajala, Brainerd, Minn., and Mary (Jeff Collett) Rajala, Green Bay, Wis.; grandchildren, Brooks (Terri) Rajala, Laina (Xan Johnson) Rajala, Anna Overbo, Steven (Kristi) Lacroix, Michael (Casey) Overbo, Alycia Overbo, Lauren Collett and Maran Collett; great-grandchildren, Torvin and Leif Rajala, Raece and Maurya Johnson, Madelyn and Georgia Lacroix, and Bergen Overbo; sisters, Leone Lind, Los Angeles, Calif., Sister Carol Marie (Eunice), Winnipeg, Canada; brother, Raymond Peloquin, Virginia, Minn.; many beloved nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids, and will continue on Friday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Minn. Rev. Ben Buchanan will officiate.
Burial will be at Bigfork Cemetery, Bigfork, Minn.
