Alice M. Penttila passed away on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013 in Yuma, Ariz.
She was born June 19, 1926 in Superior, Wis., to Edward and Fern (Lull) Lindberg.
She Alice graduated from Carlton High School in 1944 and was united in marriage to Richard Gerlach on July 31, 1945. They lived and raised their four children in Carlton until his death on Jan. 31, 1977. Alice was employed as the secretary to the principle of Carlton Elementary School in January of 1962 until April of 1979. She then married Oiva Penttila on April 21, 1979 and moved to New Brighton, Minn., until his retirement in May of 1982. They traveled in the winters and spent their summers at their lake home in Canada, until 1999 when they settled in Yuma, Ariz. Alice loved cooking, the Holidays, fishing, flying and received her pilots license at the age of 54.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Richard; daughter, Gwen VanGuilder; four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Oiva Penttila; daughters, Linda (James) Warren and Sheila (David) Hopp; son, Bruce (Debora) Gerlach; son-in-law, Tom VanGuilder; sister, Lois Olson; step-son, Richard (Barb) Penttila; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
