Elsie Ethel (Spiik) Stenman, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton.
She was born in Duluth on June 18, 1919.
Elsie graduated from Central High School in 1938, attended Duluth Teacher’s College, Suomi College in Hancock, Michigan, and received her Bachelor Degree in Music Education from the College of St. Scholastica in 1943. She was the first music teacher for the South St. Louis County School District. In 1946, Elsie married William Stenman and moved to Esko where they raised five children.
Elsie was a long-time member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Esko, the Finnish Historical Society, Friendship Bible Coffees, Esko Senior Citizens, Arc (for people with developmental disabilities), and AARP. Elsie was an accomplished pianist who generously shared her love of music, love of God, and love of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents, Samuel and Hilda Spiik; her step-father, Albert Jensen; and a grandson, Justin Aubol.
Elsie is survived by two sons, Dave of Kasson, Minn., and Brian of Duluth; three daughters, Sandra (Bill) Raisanen of Barnum, Barbara (Jim) Murdock of Duluth, and Annette (Mark) Mills of Esko; three grandchildren, Tessa (Aaron) Rendahl, Joe (Amy) Raisanen, and Jennifer Currier; and six great grandchildren.
VISITATION: 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. Funeral Service, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 in Apostolic Lutheran Church, Esko. Burial will follow at Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery.
