Billie Marie (Karpenter) Johnson passed away peacefully on Sept. 8, 2013.
She was born on Nov. 19, 1931 to Neil and Margaret (Cardnell) Karppinen in Mullen, Idaho.
She spent her younger days in California and Colorado before her family settled in Cloquet, Minn. She had many adventures growing up - fishing in the Colorado River, picking pears in the family orchard, roller skating, riding horses and climbing trees. Billie graduated from Cloquet High School in 1949 and married Norman Edward Johnson of Esko on Aug. 5, 1950. At the age of 31, Billie was widowed with their six children to raise, all under the age of 10. With faith, Sisu, and an unwavering commitment to her family’s happiness, her life’s greatest duty and reward was keeping her family together. Her devoted children will always be grateful for her sacrifice and love.
Billie will be remembered for her love of art, her creativity and sense of humor. She was an occupational therapist at St. Luke’s and Miller Dwan Hospitals. After retiring in 1986, Billie stayed very active pursuing her interests and hobbies. She especially enjoyed volunteering and costuming at the Duluth Playhouse.
Billie Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; infant daughter, Norma Jean; parents Neil and Margaret Karppinen and brother, Neal Karpenter.
She is survived by her children Norman Jr. (Susan), Evelyn (Bryan) Nelson, Peggy (Tom) Spehar, Karen (Tom) House, Thomas and Jeffrey; her grandchildren Charity (Eric) Stockland, Sheri (Carter) Nelson, Elizabeth and Thomas Spehar, Brittney Johnson, Zane Johnson, Tim (Cristy) House, Derek House; and her sister Paula Sime and many nieces and nephews. She loved her dear friends at the playhouse, in her Kaleva Tupa, and her high school classmates.
