Virginia "Ginny" M. Hanson, 86, of Esko, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, surrounded by her family at her daughter's home in Floodwood.
Ginny was born May 25, 1927, in Minneapolis, to Ben and Nina Burggraff. She attended many elementary schools in Minneapolis, junior high school in Edina, Minn., and graduated from St. Louis Park (Minn.) High School in 1945. She attended North Central University in Minneapolis, graduating in 1948.
Ginny married Harold I. Hanson June 7, 1947, in the Minneapolis Gospel Tabernacle and moved to Esko in 1950. She drove school bus for Cloquet, Carlton and Esko for 20 years. Ginny also did the school census and bus routing for 25 years. She worked in the behavioral and learning disabled classroom and set up the first detention room in the Winterquist Elementary School.
Ginny was a member of the Cloquet Gospel Tabernacle since 1950 and for the last ten months attended Christian Way Fellowship in Meadowlands. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, baking, playing the piano and accordion and was affectionately known as "the cake lady" for the many cakes she made throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold; a baby sister, Caroline; and brothers Ellsworth, Jerome, and Lloyd Burggraff.
Ginny is survived by her sons, Garry (Luann) of Duluth, Larry (Krystal) of Carlton, Gordon (Jean) of Duluth, David (Tami) of Champlin, Minn., Timothy (Elizabeth) of Israel and Steven (Becky) of Esko; daughters Linda (Mark) Lane of Buffalo, Minn., and Eileen (Grant) Heikkila of Floodwood; 27 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS: 10 until the 11 .m. memorial service Friday, Aug. 30, in the Cloquet Gospel Tabernacle, 1400 Washington Ave., Cloquet.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Minnesota Teen Challenge. Interment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
