Garry L. Koopman, 69, of Cloquet, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
He was born May 2, 1944 in Hendricks, Minn., to Frank and Jeanettie (Berg) Koopman.
Garry served in the U.S. Army Rangers, serving with the United Nations peace keeping force in the Belgium Congo. Garry worked in construction for 15 years with the Union Local 49. He then had a 16 year career as Chief of Police for the city of Scanlon. Garry was united in marriage to Barbara (Ollila) Curtis on Feb. 2, 1977 in Cloquet. He also loved hunting and woodworking and carving.
Garry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Robert; and one sister, Ruby Campbell.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, Christopher and David (Lisa) Curtis; two brothers, Harvey (Murial) and Joel (Jan) Koopman; one sister, Wanice (Dick) Hoff; one sister-in-law, Martha (Glen) Tate; seven grandchildren, Tyler Curtis, Haley Curtis, Connor Curtis, Dakota Goad, Erica Goad, Nia Shea Curtis, and Roan Curtis; and several nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 12 Noon Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 until the 1 p.m. memorial service in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Inurnment services will follow at Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery in Esko, with Military Honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.
