Walter Thomas Tveit, 92, of Floodwood died Sunday, June 30, 2013 in Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids.
He was born July 26, 1920 in Halden Township to Thomas and Ottilia Tveit.
He grew up and attended the Halden School. As a teenager, Walter started working in the woods. In 1940 he moved to Iowa where he worked on his uncle’s farm. It was in Iowa that Walter met and would later marry Burnette Thompson. They were married on Dec. 8, 1944. Walter left for the Navy shortly after getting married and in 1946 after his discharge from the Navy, they moved to Floodwood where they made their home and raised their four children.
In Floodwood Walter farmed and logged. He worked at the feed mill and later at Wood Conversion in Cloquet. He worked part time for St. Louis County doing road maintenance until 1960 when this became a full time job. He retired as supervisor in 1984.
Walter was a member of Hope Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and was also the sexton for Hope Lutheran Cemetery for several years. He served on the Floodwood School Board and the Credit Union Board. Walter was also a member of the Floodwood VFW. In 2000 Walter received his honorary high school diploma.
Walter enjoyed wood working, cutting and splitting fire wood, hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Walter was very social and enjoyed meeting and visiting with people and was always willing to help others.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Burnette; son, William; brother, Arnold; and sister, Helen Koski.
He is survived by three children, Ruth (Ercell) Dupont of Backus, Linda Lundstrom of Savage, and Gary (Karen) of Churchville, N.Y.; brother, Donald Tveit of Floodwood; sister, Alice Newman of Fort Bragg, Calif.; sister-in-law, Dinah Tveit of Floodwood; five grandchildren, Jennifer White, Mike and Chris Lundstrom, Ingrid and Ashley Tveit; and three great grandchildren, Tessa, Charlotte, and Leila.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, July 3, 2013 in Hope Lutheran Church in Floodwood. Burial will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Floodwood VFW. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the church social hall.
