John “Jack” Vincent Barnes, 87, of Scanlon died Thursday, June 27, 2013 in St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.
John was born on Feb. 11, 1926 to Vail and Sophia (Schmidt) Barnes in Finlayson and grew up on a farm in Banning Junction.
He attended school in Sandstone. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the Philippines. John lived most of his adult life in Scanlon.
John retired from Potlatch Corporation where he worked in the Beater Room as a hydro pulper operator for 38 years.
He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, the Potlatch Quarter Century Club, and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing in Banning Junction and Sturgeon Lake, and keeping busy with his children, grandkids and great grandkids.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in 2012; daughter, Barbara Berthiaume in 2012; and brother, Thomas in 2008.
He is survived by his children, Susan Jones of Duluth, Carol (David) Tribby of Carlton, David (Terri) Barnes of Esko, and Mark (Carolyn Burke) Barnes of Barnum; son-in-law, Michael Berthiaume; grandchildren, Lance, Jeff, Courtney, McKenzie, Dana, Tessie, James, Heather, Ashley, Andrew, Alyssa, Kaylie, Kaitlyn and Kelsey; and 11 great grandchildren.
Special thanks to John’s grandson Lance for taking care of grandpa in his home during his last year of life.
VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday, July 1, 2013 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. Burial will follow at New Calvary Cemetery.
