Michael J. "Mike" Gunderson, 65, of Virginia died Monday, June 17, 2013 at his home following a brief illness.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1947 in Duluth.
Mike attended elementary and secondary school in Duluth and Eveleth. He did his undergraduate work at UMD and received his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Superior. He worked for the US Department of Labor, AEOA and the State of MN during the Perpich administration.
Mike loved people; family and friends were what mattered most in his life. He was a kid at heart and he lived life with the energy and joy that children possess. Christmas and Halloween were favorite times for him. They provided an opportunity to engage with children. He was a close friend of Santa Claus. His favorite suit was red. Mike worked hard and played harder. He had an infectious laugh and he loved a good joke or a bad joke, it didn't matter. He loved fishing for walleye, golf, a good cigar, fine wine, UMD hockey and a bargain. He also loved time spent at the family cabin, especially the sauna during the spring and fall. He often celebrated his birthday with a sauna and plunge in the lake.
He will be missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends. It is safe to say he loved life and was generous with his affections.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne; brother, Tom and mother-in-law, Lema Corbett.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Julie Gunderson of Portland, Ore., Christine (Richard) Murray of St. Paul, Daniel (Melanie) Gunderson of Duluth; grandchildren, Megan, Norah and Laney Gunderson; Samantha and John Murray; his mother, Dorothy Jaret of Duluth; brothers, David (Renee), John (Karen) both of Duluth and Joe (Leisa) of Eveleth; sisters, Kathy (James) Doyle of Duluth, Mary (Joe) Vujcevic of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Judy (Robert) Thornton and Joan (Mark) Wick both of Duluth and sister-in-law, Mary Gunderson of Alborn; numerous nieces and nephews.
