Mary Lillian Jones, 94, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at Grand Village.
Mary was born June 6, 1918 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Julian and Romaine VanOverschelde.
Mary was raised north of Grand Rapids, and attended Blackie Country School. She married Bert L Jones in Cohasset on Dec. 15, 1934. Together Bert and Mary raised four children, all while working a variety of jobs including cooking at Blackie School, working at the Rutabaga Cannery, waitressing at B&B Restaurant in Cohasset, as well as work at Globe Drug, Gamble’s Hardware Store, Itasca Dry Goods and the Itasca Clinic.
When not spending time with family, Mary enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking and canning. She and Bert were both active in the Grand Rapids Moose and Eagles Clubs. The Freestone Extension Club also provided Mary the opportunity to socialize and help out with community activities.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Throughout her life, Mary was known for her kindness and good-hearted spirit. She was often seen smiling, laughing, and visiting with both friends and strangers. Her quick wit, friendly personality, and caring nature brought comfort and happiness to those around her. It was Mary’s strong family values, as well as her continual love and affection that kept Mary’s immediate and extended family near her side throughout the majority of her life, as well as during her final days on earth. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and loved her.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bert in 2003; son Robert in 1942; sister Norma [Yorks]; and brother August VanOverschelde; son-in-law George Dumm and great grandson Karson Koenig.
Mary is survived by her daughter Eva Dumm of Grand Rapids; sons Dennis and Jim [Bev] of Grand Rapids and Ray [Kay] of Coleraine; grandchildren Deb [Ben] Passeri, Cyndi [Scott] Huhtala, Tim [Kim] Dumm, Nancy [Eric] Koenig, Bob Jones, Bill [Si Kyong] Jones, Sue [Jon] Adams, Patty and Jennifer Jones, as well as numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 in the Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids and will continue on Wednesday, June 12, from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Memorial service in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Rapids. Inurnment will be at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery.
