Edward Joseph Karkoska, 84, the original founder of Giant's Ridge Ski Area, passed away May 14, 2013, in the comforts of his home with the love of his family embracing him.
Edward took tremendous pride in being a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, loyal friend, avid outdoorsman, World War II Marine, LTV Steele Mining Superintendant, MSHA Instructor, AIME President, visionary and mining engineer.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gretchen Karkoska; children David (Kim) Karkoska, Kim Karkoska, Peter Karkoska, Lynn (Greg) Lenz, Noni (Kurtis Wosmek) Karkoska; grandchildren Joseph, Jill, Sophie, Maude, Olivia, Kaya, Eva, and Henry and great-grandson Brody.
Edward lived his life in its entirety with dignity, grace, honor and kindness. Semper Fi, Eddie.
VISITATION: 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Virginia. Mass to follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donation to the CHUM Center in Duluth, Northwoods Children's Home or an organization of your choosing.
