Robert W. Gamble, 87, passed away in Englewood, Fla., on March 13, 2013.
"Bob" was born in Superior, Wis., and lived the majority of his life in Cloquet, Minn.
Upon graduating from Cloquet High School in 1944, Bob joined the United States Navy and was assigned to the V-12 College Training Program, which was designed to supplement the force of commissioned officers in the Navy during World War II. Bob received an honorable discharge from the Navy in June of 1946 with the rank of Ensign.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Bob received Bachelors and Masters degrees in Civil Engineering from Princeton University (class of '47, as he was proud to say).
Following graduation, Bob went to work for Davison Chemical Corporation in Baltimore, Maryland and Lakeland, Florida as a process engineer. It was during his time in Florida that he met his wife Anna. Bob and Anna were married in February of 1954 and made their home in Cloquet where Bob and his father, Arthur, and his mother, Ann, owned and operated the Gamble Lumber Company, which was one of the anchor West End merchants for many years.
Bob was involved and held leadership positions in many organizations including the Cloquet Rotary Club, Cloquet Country Club, Cloquet Toastmasters Club, Lakehead Lumbermen's Association, Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital Building Committee, Cloquet Chamber of Commerce, City of Cloquet Planning Commission, Potlatch Scholarship Selection Committee, and the Kitchi Gammi Club of Duluth. Bob was an avid golfer and spent many hours (weather permitting or not) on the links of the Cloquet Country Club. In all things that he did, be it working with customers, serving on a committee or in a club, or fostering lifetime friendships, Bob was the consummate gentleman and was rarely without a smile.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Ann and his grandsons Peter and Eli.
Bob is survived by his wife Anna; his son Robert and wife Dolores Gamble of Carlton, Minn.; his son David and wife Mary Gamble of Ponca City, Okla.; and his daughter Elizabeth and husband Bill Eull of Falcon Heights, Minn. He is also survived by grandchildren Ethan, Claire, Michael, Bryan, Kendra, Natalie and Gabrielle.
