John Gregory "Greg" O'Brien Jr., 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family April 19, 2013, in St. Mary's hospital in Duluth.
Greg was born in Duluth to Cleo (Neipp) O'Brien and John O'Brien Sr. Feb. 18, 1942. He graduated from Duluth Cathedral High School in 1960 and attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. He worked as a reporter and news anchor at KDAL-TV and then worked in the city planning department for the city of Duluth for many years. Greg found his calling when he worked for the St. Louis County 911 Dispatch Center where he was a lead dispatcher. He spent 20 years serving St. Louis County and retired in 2004.
Greg was an avid bowler, fisherman, photographer and golfer. He got a hole-in-one at Enger Park Golf Course in 1988.
Greg is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet (Kratoska) O'Brien; his loving dog, Sami; children Daniel (Elizabeth) O'Brien and Erin (John) Cox, all of Duluth, Kelly (Thomas) Becker of Verona, Wis., and Nancy (Nathan) Hooper of Duluth; and grandchildren Emily, Derek, Thomas, Drake, Thomas Jr., Cleo, Andrew and Morgan.
Dad loved the Vikings, the Twins, and playing the slots and had equal luck with all three.
VISITATION: 9 until the 10 a.m. memorial service Monday, April 22, in the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 16222, Duluth, MN 55816. Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 624-5200.
