William "Bill", "Buck" Kwam, 91, of Duluth, Cotton, and McAllen Texas passed away peacefully at Solvay Hospice House on April 3, 2013.
Bill was born in Duluth, 1921, to Axel and Louise (Hansen) Kwam after their immigration from Trondheim, Norway.
Bill enjoyed growing up in East Hillside, roasting potatoes in the bonfire and ski jumping at Chester Bowl. He graduated from Central H.S. in 1939 and Duluth Junior College in 1948.
As a member of the National Guard, Bill was inducted into the army in 1941, serving four years with the 125th Field Artillery, Red Bull Division in Ireland, North Africa, and Italy. His division saw the longest combat of any—over 500 continuous days. Bill was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in action. After his return home, he married Mary Jane Ziminski and together they had three daughters. Bill enjoyed his family, summers at the lake, golfing, camping, recreational flying with certifications for land and sea, mastering computer skills, and playing cards with friends. After retiring in 1984, they moved to West Bass lake and wintered in McAllen; traveled throughout the U.S. from Fairbanks to Key West and throughout Mexico; and had many visits to and from family in Norway. A love of fishing took Bill on numerous camping trips into remote Ontario with U.S. and Canadian friends.
An estimator and purchasing agent for 38 years, Bill worked for several Duluth contractors. He was a member of many organizations and clubs in Duluth: Palestine Lodge, Scottish Rite, AAD Temple, Elks Club, Arrowhead Civics Club, VFW Post 137, Duluth Curling Club, Ridgeview Country Club, Duluth ANG Flying Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assoc., and NRA.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mary; his parents; grandparents Aksel of Norway and Randi Kvam of Norway and Duluth, and Haakon and Jensine Hansen of Norway; aunts Jenny Carlson, Duluth and Dagmar Torseth, Minot, ND; good friend, Pat Fraser; and grand dog, Rockie.
Bill is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law: Barb Kwam (Tom Kurtovich) Saginaw, Mary Seppo (Bob) Duluth, Nancy Kwam (David Lubben) Delano/ West Palm Beach; grandsons Dave and Mike Seppo, Duluth; cousin Irene Solberg, Rogers, Minn.; and in Norway, cousins Bjorn Hansen, Oivin Bjerkaas, Grette Remman, Trygve Elverhoi, and many other relatives.
Bill and his family wish to express sincere gratitude to the staff at Edgewood Vista, Essentia Hospital Hospice, and Solvay Hospice House for their overwhelming support and loving care of Dad and his family.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 10 a.m. April 20, in Cremation Society, 4100 Grand Ave. Visitation 9 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family greatly appreciates memorials to Solvay Hospice House.
