Donald Charles Andrews, 79, of Britt, died Friday, April 12, 2013, in St. Luke's hospice unit.
Don was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Duluth, to Eunice (Sampson) Andrews and Charles Andrews. He was a 1951 graduate of Duluth Cathedral High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Nienaber, Aug. 1, 1953. Don worked as manager for several organizations including Pickands Mather/Erie Mining, Hall Equipment, Cold Springs Granite, MAC equipment and supply, and Interstate Diesel. He gave his heart and soul to his employers and worked tirelessly in his service to them.
Don led and organized numerous community based fundraising activities and was instrumental in creating the Blue Line Hockey Club.
Don's greatest accomplishment was loving and being loved by his family. He was the proud father of nine children, 26 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Edward; and two infant brothers.
Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan; sons Steve (Nancy), Greg (Nancy), Mark (Deb), and Chuck (Sara); daughters Cheryl (Billy) Grigg, Linda Johnson, Kim (Dave) Ollila, Mary, and Lisa (Lee) Laakso; grandchildren Joe (Jenn), Allison, Andy, Annie, Cyndy, Melissa, Mary Lynn (Jason), Katie, Michael, Paul (Nicole), Joni, Davie, Sarah, Corey, Kyle, Rachel, Tra'Shon, Seth, CJ, Alex, Kye, Cody, Abby, Madison, Devon, and McCoy; great-grandchildren Jay, Marli, Ashley, Anna, Isabella, Jonathan, Brandon, Nick, Lilly, James, Justin, and Dylan; his brother, Tommy; and his sister, Nancy (Joe) Bullyan.
He was a fun grandpa and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
One of Don's favorite places on earth was Rainy Lake. He spent most of his summers with family on this lake camping, fishing and hunting. Hale Bale Island holds a special place in his heart. He loved the horse races and playing cards. He also loved the outdoors and feeling the warmth of the sunshine.
A special thank you to St. Luke's hospital and their hospice unit for the exceptional care and kindness.
Don will be deeply missed by many friends and family. We love you bunches!
