DR. CLIFFORD J. BLUMDr. Clifford J. Blum, 79, formerly of Duluth, and Solon Springs, Wis.
Dr. Clifford J. Blum, 79, formerly of Duluth, and Solon Springs, Wis., died on Thursday, March 21, 2013, in Superior, Wis., at Betty's Harbor Memory Care Unit in The Lighthouse of Superior Assisted Living.
Clifford John Blum was born Oct. 7, 1933, in Marshfield, Wis., to Virginia and Lester Blum.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Debbie Roman.
He is survived by brothers Richard (Carol), Robert and James Blum; sisters LaFae Blum and Marilyn (Louie) Suprise; his children Gail Blum (John Erickson) and Gordon Blum; grandchildren Trenton Blum, Ian and Aidan Erickson and numerous nieces and nephews.
He grew up in Marshfield, Wis., and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1951. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was trained as a radar controller and served on the aircraft carrier Philippine Sea. In 1954 he survived a fatal plane crash during a routine night flying exercise over the Pacific Ocean. Both badly injured, he and the pilot floated for hours before being rescued. Following discharge, Clifford enrolled at Michigan State University, initially to study Forestry, and later attended medical school at University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1965 he came to Duluth with his young family to intern as a General Practitioner with St. Mary's Hospital and in 1966 joined P.S. Rudie M.D. & Assoc.
For 33 years, Dr. Blum practiced with the P.S. Rudie group in the Medical Arts Building in Duluth. He was loved by his patients and respected by his colleagues for his compassion and competence. His other interests included steelhead and muskie fishing, hunting, gardening and photography. He was a beloved father, grandfather and friend and will be sorely missed, indeed, by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff of Betty's Harbor for the tender love and care they gave to Clifford during his stay.
GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 in Peace United Church of Christ, 1111 N. 11th Ave. E. Duluth.
