Gertrude Irene Stukel, 94, died peacefully in her sleep at Viewcrest Health Center in Duluth on Good Friday, March 29, 2013.
Gertrude was born on March 3, 1919, the daughter of Henry and Maria Filson of White Iron.
She was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School and played the violin in the school orchestra. She married Mathew Stukel on March 11, 1939.
She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ely. She was also a member of the North American Benefit Association, Ladies of Kaleva, and the Women’s Auxiliary of American Legion Post No. 248. She and Matty belonged to the Wilderness Whirlers Dance Club. Gertrude was a charter member of Ely’s Old-Fashioned 4th of July Committee and a member of the planning committee for the 1980 American Legion Baseball World Series Tournament held in Ely. She enjoyed cooking and baking (especially Finnish tarts), music, fishing, spending time at the cabin, folk and square dancing and painting. She was the family’s No. 1 sports spectator and fan!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Maria Filson; her husband of 64 years, Matty; her siblings, Julia Rova, Violet Kurti, Henry Filson, Oliver Filson, Gene Filson, Elma Schmidt, Laina Jerich, Martha Jonson, Elaine Sawyer, Lillian Lekatz and Eugenie McInnis and son-in-law, Allen Schmieder.
Gertrude is survived by children, Gene and Helen Stukel, Granite Falls, Sonja Schmieder of Woodbury, Jim and Mary Stukel of Duluth; AFS exchange student, Ian Garrard, Sydney, Australia; grandchildren, Andrea (Ben) Thomas, Melissa (Trevor) Schulte, Tom Stukel (Liz Deziel), Lily Schmieder (fiancé Brad Rinderknecht), Andrew, Mathew and Michael Stukel; great grandchildren, Tate and Ty Schulte, Kellen, Audrey and Clare Thomas, and Scarlett Stukel; sister-in-law, Marge (Gene) Filson and numerous nieces and nephews.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, in Grace Lutheran Church in Ely. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
