Katherine "Kitty" Berkeland, 94, of Grand Rapids, Minn., died on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Grand Village in Grand Rapids, Minn.
Katherine was born in 1918 to Allen and Mary Doran in Grand Rapids, Minn.
She attended school in Grand Rapids. She graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in 1941 and was united in marriage to Earl Berkeland in 1944 in Jacksonville, Fla. Katherine began her teaching career in Alborn, Minn., and later taught in Floodwood where she retired in 1978. She enjoyed fishing, knitting, watching sports and playing cribbage, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; and sisters, Mary Doran, Annamay Connor and Dorothy Best.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Kay (Gaylord) May; two sons, Joe (Patty) Berkeland and Jim (Jenny) Berkeland; three sisters, Patsy (Joe) Solien, Peg Schanbachler and Loretta (Frank) Johnson; a brother, Dan (Deanna) Doran; nine grandchildren, Eric, Karen, Katie, Patrick, Kelly, Molly, Adam, Maria and Ethan; and four great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Abigail, Quinn and Reagan.
VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, in Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, for one hour until the 10 a.m. Funeral Service in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids. Rev. Fr. Drew Braun will officiate. Burial will be at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
