Elma Laine, 93, of Hermantown, formerly of Proctor, died peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospice with her family by her side on Saturday, March 9, 2013. She entered into her heavenly home to the strains of the Finish music she loved.
Elma was born on June 22, 1919 in Vermillion Dam, Minn., to Finnish immigrants, Andrew and Amanda Toivola.
She attended a one room school with her brothers and sisters in Buyck, Minn., until she had to return home to help with the farm chores. Elma proudly earned her GED several years later in Duluth.
On Aug. 26, 1941, in Waukegan, Ill, Elma married the love of her life, Axel Laine. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary last year. Elma loved the North Country and spent many delightful years with Axel hunting, fishing, camping, berry picking and portaging their canoe to distant camping sites. Elma was known to her family for hosting family gatherings featuring her special roast beef and turkey dinners, topped off by her home-made blueberry pies. She filled the house with music and laughter and was often seen dancing a polka and singing while she did her household chores.
After her family grew Elmer went to work outside the home. She enjoyed many years of employment at Wahls Department Store and retired after 11 years at Maurices, where she met many new friends, to have coffee with in later years.
Elma was a life-long member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Mary Circle.
Additionally Elma enjoyed singing in the choir where she lent her sweet soprano voice. Elma was always in the kitchen ready to help with the many church potlucks and parties over the years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Axel on Feb. 6, 2013; her parents; five siblings, Hjalmer, Martin, Bertha Beckman, Donald and Helmi Autio.
Elma is survived by her children, Joanne (Bill) Amell of Richland Center, Wis., Jim (Cheryl) of Cambridge, Minn., and Cheryl (Jim) Masterson of Duluth; grandchildren, Laurie (Mike Angst) Amell, Jim Amell, Michelle (Jon) Beck, Brian (Jenny) Masterson, Amy (Rick Carlson) Masterson, Melissa Laine and Patrick Laine; great-grandchildren, Katie, Tyler, Jordan, Kelsey, Matthew, Nathan, Isabella, Max and Annika.
The family would like to acknowledge the many good friends she met at Edgewood Vista Suites and thank the Emergency Department, Cardiac Care and Hospice staff at St. Luke’s Hospital for their wonderful care. A special thanks to Dr. David Sproat and to Nurse Jodi for their many years of exceptional care of Elma.
GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 12 Noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service Saturday, March 16, in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Avenue. Memorial may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in lieu of flowers. Arrangements entrusted to Cremation Society of Minnesota, 624-5200.
