Terry Laurence Ollenburger, 61, passed away on Feb. 13, 2013 in Olympia, Wash.
Terry was born in Harvey, N.D., on Feb. 3, 1952 to Alvin Ollenburger, Ph.D. and Maelon Ollenburger, PharmD. He was the oldest of four children.
At the age of 11 he moved to Duluth, where he continued school and graduated from East High School in 1970. After graduation he joined the Navy and served for four years active duty and two years reserve. He spent 2½ years in Naples, Italy while in the service.
Terry returned to Duluth in November 1974 and met his wife Iris Karppinen just one year later. They were married in September 1976. They had two daughters; Amanda Caroline born in May 1980 and Rebecca Jean in February 1985.
During their marriage, he earned two bachelor's degrees from University of Minnesota, in Duluth. They were both Bachelors of Applied Science, one in Industrial Technology and the second in Vocational Education. A lifetime learner, he continued to take training and certification courses throughout his career, distinguishing himself as a technical expert in all fields he chose to study.
He was active in Amateur Radio (KB0DAH) in Duluth, working on Grandma's Marathon as well as the John Beargrease Sled dog race and various other local events.
In 1995, Terry moved his family to Lacey, Wash., for a promotion with Tyson Foods. After they closed their Tumwater plant he went to work for Columbia Beverage, now Pepsi Northwest Beverages. He retired from Pepsi in October 2012 due to health concerns.
In Washington he worked with American Red Cross and Search and Rescue as well as continued his involvement with Amateur Radio (KD7AED).
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Iris Ollenburger (Karppinen); daughters Amanda Backman and Rebecca (Arron) McGinnis; two grandchildren; brother Monte (Tracey Noyes) Ollenburger of Saint Anthony, Minn.; sisters, Audrey (Larry) Schubarth of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jane Ollenburger, Ph.D. of Ontario, Calif.; and his close canine companion, "Buddy."
CELEBRATION OF LIFE: 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 with a reception to follow in Evergreen Christian Community, 1000 Black Lake Blvd., Olympia, Wash.
