William Laurence "Larry" MacDonald, 75 years old, was found dead of natural causes in his residence in Boynton Beach, Fla., on Jan. 4, 2013, after a number of months of failing health.

He was born Nov. 3, 1937 in Virginia, Minnesota.

With his family, he later moved to Duluth, where he resided for many years, including extended regular visits each year, after he moved his residence to Florida. He served as a marksman in the Army National Guard from July 14, 1961 to July 13, 1964. His university history included work at the masters level. He worked many years as a Merchant Marine and traveled around the world. He was employed in a number of positions on the Great Lakes Ore Boats from Aug. 2, 1966 to Sept. 20, 2002. When the William A. Irvin was moved to its present place in Duluth's Harbor, Larry was the pilot.

His community service included being the treasurer of VFW Post 5335 in Boynton Beach, Fla. Though a private person, he was a wonderful and loyal friend and a dedicated family member. His nephews and nieces will miss very much a supportive and generous uncle. He enjoyed, so very much, the life of friendship and activity that was his with his good friends, including, and especially, his brothers.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eileen; his father, Clinton "Mac"; and his brothers, Pete and Blake.

He is survived by his nephews and nieces, as well as his great nieces and nephews.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE: June 15, 2013 in Duluth, with more details following in the coming months. A private family committal service was held on Feb. 10, 2013.

I have lost a very dear friend. We shared a lot of good times together. I was part of his world travels and a golfing buddy. He was very generous and he will be sorely missed by many people. My sympathy to the nieces and nephews. Jim and Elizabeth Nolan
