Rod “Roxie” Skorich, 90, of 39th Avenue West, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, in Essentia Health - St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Rod was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Duluth, to Esko and Evitca Skorich. He attended Denfeld High School and took welding at Morgan Park. Rod served in the U.S. Army in the western pacific during World War II, receiving a Bronze Star. He met and married Frances McGaffey Aug. 22, 1953.
Rod had worked at Coolerator and the D.M.&I.R., where he was a fireman; he then went to work for the St. Louis County Sherriff’s Department, retiring as a deputy after 30 years of service. Rod spent a short time in California, and while he was there, Rod was one of the founders of the St. Steven’s Cathedral in Alhambry, Calif.
Rod was very active in his church, St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, where he served as president of the church and its men’s club; he also was a vestryman tutor and supported the church choir. Rod was also a member and vice-president of the Holy Trinity Lodge No. 75; member of the American Legion No. 71; VFW; coached hockey at Irving; enjoyed giving away food from his huge garden; and was active in the 1975 Raleigh Street reunion. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Michael; and his sister, Helen Hammer.
Rod is survived by his wife, Frances; children Katherine Skorich-Nelson of Duluth and Daniel (LuAnn) Skorich of Saginaw; siblings Michael (Tillie) Skorich of Esko and Mary Lawrence of Duluth; nieces and nephews; his pride and joy, grandchildren Jason, Katelyn and Richard; and his best friend, Marley the dog.
VISITATION: Beginning at 5 p.m. with Pomen at 7 p.m. Monday in the Dougherty Funeral Home; and 10 until the 11a.m. service Tuesday in St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 1216 N. 104th Ave. W.
Burial with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard at Oneota Cemetery.
