Allen Jay Makitalo, 52, went to heaven on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.

Allen Jay Makitalo, 52, went to heaven on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.

Allen was born in Duluth on Jan. 13, 1961.

He graduated from Central High School in 1979. He was a caddy and worked in the pro shop and as a groundskeeper at Ridgeview Country Club. He worked on oil rigs in Oklahoma and Texas, where he was an EMT. Back in Duluth, he owned a handyman and lawn service business.

Allen enjoyed golf, fishing, and doing things with his kids. He could crack a joke at the drop of a hat. He raised chickens and a pig. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.

Allen was preceded in death by his father, Uno Makitalo; and brother, Roger.

Allen is survived by his son, Aaron (Brittany) and granddaughter Natalie; and his sons Kyle and James and their sister Brittany and mother Kim Lowinski (Tom Mullen). He leaves behind his mother, three sisters, three brothers, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Mother: Mary Frances Wilhelm Makitalo. Sisters, their children, and grandchildren: Joycine (Ed) Avalos and Kathleen, Roger (Patricia), Randy, and William; Barbara (Art) Brandt and Allen (his namesake and Godson); and Karen (Dave) Anderson and Evie (David) DeVault, Brian Johnson and Emmett, and Kim Johnson and Riley. Brothers and their children: Dale (Dorothy Lynn) and Dale Jr. and Rachael; Ken; and Rick. Close friends: Lewis Bailey, Bill White, Carol Carlson, Stephanie (Brent) Gould, and Bootsie (his dog).

SERVICES: will not be held as requested by Allen. A Gathering of Family and Friends open house will be held tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the activity room at Aftenro Home, 510 West College Street (by UMD).
