KENNETH REMINGTON TAYLOR

Kenneth Remington Taylor, 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013.

He was born on March 18, 1917 in Duluth to Ethel and Remington Taylor and grew up in Duluth’s Central Hillside.

He married the love of his life, LaRayne Marie Hollingsworth on July 17, 1941. They had five children and raised their family in Morgan Park.

LaRayne and Ken loved to dance and travel. One of their favorite dancing spots was the VFW in Duluth where he served as commander. Another of his passions was bowling. Ken was inducted into the Duluth Bowling Hall of Fame.

Ken served with the U.S. Army in World War II from August 1942 until December 1945. He was assigned to the 776th anti-aircraft artillery battalion, serving in Patton’s 3rd Army and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. Ken landed on the beaches of Normandy in the second wave.

Ken was a Staff Sergeant and received many decorations: the American Theater Service Ribbon, the Belgian Fourragere and the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. He has a star at the Richard I. Bong Historical Center in Superior, Wis., and was on the first honor flight to leave Duluth to attend the ceremonies in Washington DC dedicated to those soldiers who served in World War II.

After returning from the war, he went on to work for 37 years at U.S. Steel. In 1971, when U.S. Steel closed its operation in Morgan Park, Ken worked as a foreman at Diamond Tool, retiring at the age of 65. In the following years, you could find Ken at Nemadji Golf Course, where he walked the fairways and carried his own clubs until he was well into his 80s.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife; and his sister, Virginia.

He is survived, loved and will be remembered forever by his children, Cheryl (Roger) Vine, Ronald (June) Taylor, Derba (Stephen) Stojevich, Jeffrey (Luanne) Taylor and Janis Taylor; his grandchildren, Jodi Vine, Rocky (Christy) Vine, Ryan (Shawna) Vine, Rhonda (Mark) Bonner, Charlene Prez, Jill (Cory) Hornbacher, Laura (Antiwan) Easley, Shari Stojevich, Courtney (Peter) Duval and Alana Taylor; his nine great-grandchildren; his sisters, Mildred Hegwood and Ruth Smith; his brothers, Jim Taylor and Dick Taylor; and many extended family and friends.

His family would like to thank the employees of River Hill Assisted Living, with a special thank you to Mark and Patty Stenhammer. Mark was both his caregiver and his friend.

GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service Thursday, Jan. 24, in First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4100 Grand Avenue.
