DR. VERNON HARRINGTON

Dr. Vernon Harrington of Stuart, Fla. formerly of Duluth, passed in Stuart on Jan. 16.

Dr. Vernon Harrington of Stuart, Fla., formerly of Duluth, passed in Stuart on Jan. 16.

Vern was born in 1925 in Minneapolis, died in Stuart, and spent significant time in a dozen residences, but his "home" was Northland Country Club, where he was a member and past president and ultimately an honorary life member. He was known to buy carpet for at least one room in his home not based on color or price but rather how well it matched the "feel" of a green at Northland so he could golf all year.

Dr. Harrington received his MD from the University of Minnesota in 1948 and spent stints in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps and the Cleveland Clinic before settling in Duluth. His medical career there included service at both St. Luke's and St. Mary's, and the Duluth Clinic, where he also served for a period as president.

One of the Founding Physicians of the UMD Medical School, he also served there as a Clinical Professor and later as Adjunct Emeritus Faculty. He served as Chair of the Duluth Clinic Education and Research Foundation, Trustee of the Duluth Mental Hygiene Clinic, and later worked as a staff member of the Volunteers in Medicine in Stuart for over 10 years.

His Duluth resume also included serving as a director for both the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Development Corp. He was a trustee of Northern City Bank and WDSE Educational TV and served as president of the Duluth-Superior Symphony. When he moved to Florida he sang in the Mariner Sands Chapel Choir and was a member of the country club at Mariner Sands.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Chamberlin Harrington.

He is survived by nephews Dan Chamberlin of Taiwan, Joe Harrington of Minnetonka, Minn., and David Harrington of Bemidji, Minn.

SERVICE: 12 Noon Monday, Jan. 28 in Mariner Sands Chapel in Stuart. Memorials to Volunteers in Medicine, 417 Balboa Av, Stuart, FL 34994 or The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, 331 W. Superior St. Suite 100, Duluth, MN 55802.

Quoting John Donne: "Ask not for whom the bells toll; they toll for thee." Those words have never meant more with the passing of Vern Harrington. Marguerite Hubert-Emanuel

Dr Harrington will be missed and fondly remembered by those here at Essentia Health SMMC and Duluth Clinic Switchboard who knew him through the years. He was a very kind man and always had time for anyone.
